Cuban Dance
Cuban Dance (Anatoliy Beldinsky) was composed in the early 1960s, during a period of cultural exchange between the Soviet Union and Cuba. Beldinsky wrote the piece to capture the rhythmic vitality of Cuban music while preserving a distinctly Slavic melodic line. He passed the manuscript to Kyiv guitarist Konstantin Smaga, who helped circulate it through Soviet guitar circles. Along the way, the composer’s name was lost, and the work spread widely as “anonymous.” Its approachable technique and memorable melody made it a favorite among teachers and performers throughout Eastern Europe. In recent years, researchers and guitarists have restored its proper attribution to Beldinsky, recognizing it as one of the most beloved intermediate-level guitar pieces of the Soviet era.
